Hail and Storm Records for the San Antonio Area

Red Roan Construction publishes the hail record for its South Texas service area, taken from NOAA's Storm Events Database. Across Bexar, Kendall, Comal and Guadalupe counties, NOAA logged 469 hail reports from 2015 through 2025, and 383 of them were an inch or larger. How Often Does It Hail Around San Antonio?

Hail reaches the San Antonio area every year. NOAA has hail on 127 county-days across the four counties, and there is no year in the eleven with fewer than 12 reports. A county-day is one county with one or more hail reports on one date, so a storm that crosses two counties counts twice. Bexar County leads with 58 hail days, about 5.3 a year, and Guadalupe County has the fewest at 17, about 1.5 a year.

The reports are uneven. 2018 was the quietest year with 12 reports across all four, and 2016 was the heaviest with 79. A homeowner who judges the risk by the last few calm years is reading the wrong part of the chart.

Bexar County holds 302 of the 469 reports. The largest stone anywhere in the four counties is 5.5 inches in Bexar County, reported 3 May 2021. The strongest wind gust is 87 knots in Comal County.

The share of reports at one inch or larger is Bexar County 82 percent, Kendall County 86 percent, Comal County 82 percent, Guadalupe County 72 percent. In every county the clear majority of reports are of stones an inch or larger.

What Should You Do With a Hail Record Like This?

Use it to decide when to look, not whether your roof was hit. The record says hail is a yearly event across these counties, concentrated from March through June. A roof evaluation done before that window gives you a dated, photographed baseline to compare against after a storm.

Red Roan's free evaluation produces that report. Each finding gets a photograph and a place on the list of what needs attention now, what can wait and what is routine. The homeowner keeps it. After a storm it is the first paper a claim file needs, and the Texas Department of Insurance says to photograph the damage and keep receipts before any permanent repair.

The storm damage repair services and free roof evaluation process pages describe the visit, and the free hail inspection and claim guide walks through the Texas claim steps. The hail claims in San Antonio page adds the month-by-month count of large hail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does it hail around San Antonio?

Every year so far. NOAA has 469 hail reports for Bexar, Kendall, Comal and Guadalupe counties between 2015 and 2025, and even the quietest year had 12. Bexar gets the most hail days, about 5.3 a year.

Which of the four counties gets the most hail?

Bexar County, with 302 reports on 58 days. San Antonio sits inside it, and more people watching means more reports, so some of that lead is just coverage. Only Guadalupe County logs more wind than hail.

Where does this hail data come from?

It comes from NOAA's Storm Events Database, run by the National Centers for Environmental Information. We took the 2015 through 2025 detail files, kept the hail and thunderstorm wind rows for these four counties, and saved them in this site's repository on 17 October 2026.

Can I use these numbers to prove hail hit my roof?

No. A NOAA entry gives one stone size at one spot on one day. That tells you about the storm. Only a roof evaluation with photographs tells you what happened to your roof, and a claim file wants both.

Does Red Roan Construction check roofs in all four counties?

Yes, all four counties are inside the company's South Texas service area. The check costs nothing, you keep the photographed written report, and installed work carries a 5-year workmanship warranty.

Where These Numbers Come From

Hail and thunderstorm wind rows come from the NOAA Storm Events Database detail files for 2015 through 2025, filtered to Texas and saved in this site's repository. County figures count every report NOAA files under that county. Town figures count reports starting within 10 miles of the Census Bureau's center point for the place, so neighboring towns share reports and the town rows do not add up. A hail day is a calendar date with at least one hail report in the county. Hail sizes are the reported stone diameter in inches, and wind speeds are in knots, as NOAA records them. Reports come from spotters, emergency managers, the public and the weather service, so they follow where people are as well as where hail fell. Downloaded 17 October 2026. A recompute script re-reads the saved files and fails the site build checks if a printed number changes.
